Machine guns are set up and all the Russians are shot dead including Sina and her two children.
Sina waves a pistol at them, scaring Natalya but Alex says put that away, and she does.Īs Natalya walks along a path near Sina’s house, a truck passes her and she hides as the driver helps everyone back onto the ground. He takes her to Sina’s house, a shack in the woods and they go inside. She and Alex, another Russian, talk about their memories of holidays and customs they celebrated as children, and they laugh. She gets to work with the injured German soldiers. Yet she’s feeling at one with her native country. The towns they see are burned and black and smell of death. On the train, she’s befriended by Greta who offers her cigarettes and Vodka, not very good. She’d fled Leningrad with her parents during Stalin’s fatal five-year plan but wants to go to Russia again. Alexander is the historic story of Natalya, a volunteer nurse who is heading for the war front.
